Rocky River Ohio Dentist, Dr. John Kinsley, Helps Patients in the treatment of TMJ Problems and Headaches

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ's) are the joints that are involved in the movement of our jaws when we open and close to chew, swallow and speak. The TM joints are the most used joints in the entire body. The mandible (the lower jaw) is the only bone in the body that moves with the use of two joints. It can rotate open and close but it can also unhinge and move out of the joint sockets when we bite into an apple or into an ear of corn. Disorders of the TM joints can cause many different head, neck and facial pain symptoms which are sometimes originally misdiagnosed as migraines, tension headaches, neuralgia and even psychological illnesses. Dr. John Kinsley wants his Rocky River and surrounding Northeast Ohio area patients along with those seeking answers to their headaches and jaw dysfunction problems to learn how they may benefit from new state of the art diagnosis and treatment options.

Common signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders include:
  • Clicking/Popping jaw joints
  • Clenching/Grinding of teeth
  • Facial pain Tired jaws
  • Difficulty in eating or swallowing
  • Limited jaw opening or jaw locking
  • Chronic headaches
  • Drifting bite (changes in your bite or how your teeth fit together)
  • Changes in the facial skeleton (recessive chin, assymmetry of the face)
  • Ear congestion
  • Ringing of the ears
  • Neck and shoulder pain

What causes TMJ disorders?
We now know that trauma is a major cause of TMJ disorders. Traumas such as whiplash, sports related injuries, concussions, slips and falls, and a direct blow to the jaw are all primary examples. Other major factors can result from a misaligned bite, ill fitting dental work, failure in the growth of the joints and jaws, and certain forms of arthritis.

Forward Head Posturing:
Many TMJ patients carry their head too far forward. This kind of posture can cause numbing or tingling sensations in the hands, difficulty clearing the ear, and pain in the jaw, head, neck, shoulders and upper back. Poor head posture puts tremendous strain on the muscles which overtime changes how the patient bites his or her teeth together. It is well documented that head posture and bite are closely related. More advanced problems can create alot of "cross-talk" between the muscles and nerves that supply the head and neck making the diagnosis and treatment more complicated.
The key to the success in the treatment of any disease is to first make an accurate diagnosis. The dental and medical community for years have called TMJ problems "TMJ Syndrome". But a syndrome is not a specific diagnosis. Did you know that up to 80% of all headache pain can come from a bad bite or an undiagnosed joint problem? Let's face it, if you had chronic headaches, you probably would first go see your doctor. A typical scenario may go like this: The doctor may order some tests and then prescribe some medication. If that is not successful, a referral to a neurologist may follow to rule out a tumor or some other pathosis. If the neurologist can not determine that there is anything wrong, the patient may be referred back to their doctor who now may refer to an ENT specialist. The ENT may find nothing wrong (no ear infections) and so the patient is referred back to their doctor who then may say "Well you're just too stressed" and "You need a vacation" or "Go see a psychiatrist!" Fortunately through the use of advanced technology and performing a thorough history and examination, we can accurately diagnose the condition of the joints thereby allowing us to develope a treatment and management protocol to help the patient return back to health, comfort and function.

After Dr. Kinsley graduated from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1987, he began to study extensively at several renowned Institutes...The L.D. Rocky River, OH Dentist Dr. John Kinsley Straightens Teeth The No-Show Way With Invisalign

Rocky River, OH Dentist Dr. John Kinsley Straightens Teeth The No-Show Way With Invisalign

The dilemma is a common one: You want to straighten your teeth, but you also don’t want to wear highly visible metal braces. Rocky River, OH dentist Dr. John Kinsley hears these statements quite frequently at his office. Fortunately, he offers a solution for those with mild to moderate misalignment: Invisalign clear aligners.

The problem with having crooked teeth can be much more than just an embarrassing smile. Teeth that are not aligned properly create what dentist call “malocclusion.” 74% of all American adults have malocclusion.  Left untreated, malocclusion can lead to periodontal disease due to the difficulty in cleaning crooked teeth or areas with spaces between them where food can get wedged between the teeth and gums. Poor alignment creates abnormal amounts of stress on the teeth, jaws, muscles and joints. Teeth will wear down, get loose and fracture ultimately leading to the loss of teeth.

Invisalign treatment is a breakthrough technique where Dr. Kinsley straightens your teeth without braces, using a series of clear, comfortable aligners that are custom molded to fit your teeth. The aligners are worn 22 hours per day and are removed before eating and while brushing and flossing. No more food getting stuck between the metal brackets. The virtually invisible aligners gradually reposition your teeth into a smile you’ll be proud of. And as an added benefit, your new straight teeth are much easier to clean!  Treatment time is specific for each patient but on average is between 6 months to one year for mild to moderate malocclusions.

Rocky River, OH Dentist John Kinsley, DDS, Detects Dental Decay with Diagnodent Laser Technology

Finding dental caries (cavities) before they have a chance to damage teeth dramatically minimizes the need for future extensive treatments as well as the risk of losing teeth due to decay. With Diagnodent, a cutting-edge laser device designed to identify cavities, pitting or fractures affecting the teeth, Rocky River, OH dentist John Kinsley, DDS, can now discover dental decay in its earliest stages and begin aggressive treatment measures to stop progression of the cavity. Additionally, oral examinations using Diagnodent means that patients will not have to experience the discomfort of sharp dental tools picking at their teeth since Diagnodent relies on painless, state-of-the-art laser technology.

It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of small cavities remain undetected by visual and traditional X-ray examination. By incorporating Diagnodent into his practice, Rocky River, OH dentist Dr. John Kinsley offers patients the advantages of receiving oral care from one of the best preventative devices ever developed by researchers in the oral health industry. Dr. Kinsley begins an examination with Diagnodent by aiming the laser at healthy tooth enamel, thus establishing a “normal benchmark” reading and then shining the Diagnodent laser on areas suspected to be prone to decay. Information provided by the laser is electronically evaluated and converted to an acoustic warning signal accompanied by a digital number displayed on the computer monitor. When certain wavelengths are emitted, numerical readings between 10 and 100 are provided to Dr. Kinsley, who then determines whether the enamel is structurally healthy or is softening and developing into an actual cavity.

Detecting pits in enamel between teeth with Diagnodent before they become visible prevents the spread of bacterial biofilm responsible for tooth decay and gingivitis. Upon finding compromised areas with the Diagnodent laser, Rocky River, OH dentist Dr. John Kinsley may apply bonding or white filling material to repair and protect enamel from further damage. When cavities are large or decay is extensive, enamel-colored fillings are generally not applicable due to the magnitude of the cavity. Dental crowns may be necessary or even extraction if the tooth is beyond the point of restoration. Diagnodent can help both children and adults avoid lengthy dental treatments by providing Dr. Kinsley with detailed information concerning the most concealed areas of each tooth.

Dr. John Kinsley Provides Superior Dental Diagnosis with Digital X-rays in Rocky River, OHIO

Dr. John Kinsley Provides Superior Dental Diagnosis with Digital X-rays in Rocky River, OHIO

Advancements in technology have dramatically improved the dental industry over the years, enhancing every step of dental care, from diagnosis to treatment. New technology has even improved how dentists X-ray patients’ teeth and the supporting jaw bone, with digital X-rays quickly becoming the industry standard. Dr. John Kinsley uses digital radiography to provide top-of-the-line dental care to his patients in Rocky River, OH.

Digital X-rays are taken in a similar manner to traditional dental X-rays that use film. However, instead of using film, X-ray images are captured by a digital sensor, rather than by film, placed in the patient’s mouth. This sensor is connected to an imagining program on a computer that projects the image for easy viewing, which allows the dentists to view the structures of your teeth and bone more closely and with better accuracy than traditional dental X-rays. Better images for your dentist mean there is a greater chance that he will spot any problems sooner and fix them before they can become more serious or painful.

In addition to clearer images, digital X-rays also produce up to 90 percent less radiation than traditional dental X-rays. This is because the digital sensor is much more sensitive to radiation than film, so less is needed to form an accurate image. While traditional X-rays are considered safe by professionals, those who receive X-rays frequently or who are concerned about radiation will feel more comfortable with digital radiography.

Dr. John Kinsley Utilizes Air Abrasion to Provide Patients with Dental Care Without Shots or Drills in Rocky River, Ohio

Dr. John Kinsley is a general and cosmetic dentist in Rocky River, OH who is dedicated to providing his patients with the best dental service available, and one of the ways he does this is by using high-quality dental tools that can increase patient comfort and reduce anxiety during procedures. From using top-of-the-line technology to detect tooth decay to performing dental procedures with tools that reduce pain, Dr. Kinsley consistently puts his patients’ dental experience and oral health first.

One tool that allows the dentist to enhance his patients’ dental care is the air abrasion tool, which forgoes drills and shots. With no vibrations, friction or heat, there is no jarring of sensitive nerves or anxiety. The tool instead delivers a gentle stream of particles with forced air that removes decay quickly and gently.

Because it is quicker and does not require sedation, air abrasion allows more teeth to be worked on in one visit and with no side effects. This is much more convenient for both the dentist and the patient than traditional drills and allows you to have necessary dental work without cutting too much into your busy schedule. Additionally, air abrasion allows for more of the healthier tooth structure to be conserved when removing decay. It is also highly effective in stronger bonding procedures.

Dr. John Kinsley Saves Patients’ Teeth with Root Canals in Rocky River, OH

Dr. John Kinsley, DDS

Dr. John Kinsley Saves Patients’ Teeth with Root Canals in Rocky River, OH

If one of your teeth has become infected in its root, a root canal is required to save your tooth and oral health. Without the procedure, infection can not only kill your tooth and require extraction but also spread to other parts of your mouth and jawbone.  If you are experiencing pain in one of your teeth, you shouldn’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with Dr. John Kinsley in Rocky River, OH.
Teeth consist of a soft core called dental pulp, which extends from the tooth’s crown to the tip of its root in the jawbone. The dental pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that can become infected if extensive decay, cracks or a tooth fracture allows bacteria in. Signs and symptoms of an infection include a hole in your tooth, swelling, the bite feeling "High", a toothache and sensitivity to hot or cold foods and liquids.

To treat an infected tooth, Dr. Kinsley will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area around the infected tooth. Then he will remove all the old filling material and decay. Using small precision technology, Dr. Kinsley removes the infected or diseased pulp and then will clean and disinfect the canals before filling and sealing them. At a subsequent appointment, the tooth will be reinforced with a bonded filling and protected by fabricating and placing a dental crown.

While the thought of a root canal may sound scary, the procedure has come a long way in recent years. Thanks to advances in anesthesia, technology and pain killers, there is minimal to no discomfort following root canal treatment. Many of Dr. Kinsley's patients are so relaxed during a root canal that they momentarily nod off to sleep. He truly feels blessed in helping patients get rid of their pain and root canal therapy is one of his favorite procedures to perform.

If you are feeling tooth pain, sensitivity to temperatures and pressure or swelling in one of your teeth, you may need root canal therapy to save your tooth from extraction.
